The Magic Ingredients

  1. Tomato paste — a whole food plant-based alternative to store-bought hot sauce.
  2. Hemp seeds — adding creaminess and healthy omega-3’s!
  3. Dates — providing a touch of natural sweetness to balance the flavors.
  4. Apple cider vinegar — a simple vegan staple that adds a hint of tanginess.
  5. Soy sauce — deep and savory Umami for the perfect sauce!
  6. Chili, garlic & smoked paprika — a delightful spice combination that rounds out the rich flavors of the vegan buffalo sauce.

To sweeten the sauce, we use whole dates, requiring a blender to puree and blend them with the other ingredients.

How to Make the Sugar-Free Buffalo Sauce

  1. If your blender isn’t top-notch, soak the dates in warm water for 15 minutes before starting.
  2. Toss all the ingredients into your blender and blend on high until smooth.
  3. Tailor the taste to your preferences by adjusting vinegar, salt, chili, or smoked paprika quantities.
  4. Smother your favorite dishes with this delectable homemade buffalo sauce!

Spicy Vegan Buffalo Sauce
Spicy Vegan Buffalo Sauce

Is this buffalo sauce spicy?

We’d describe it as slightly spicy and perfectly flavored. However, consider your own spice tolerance. Start with just half a teaspoon of chili powder and adjust accordingly.

For those looking for extra heat, add some Frank’s RedHot Sauce (make sure it’s vegan!) or another vegan-friendly brand.

Nutrition & Adjustments

Our buffalo sauce recipe is much healthier than traditional ones or store-bought versions because it’s made only from whole food plant-based ingredients.

Other buffalo sauces typically contain around 90% calories from fat (or 10 grams of fat per 100 calories), while our wholesome version has just over half that—54% calories from fat, or 6 grams per 100 calories.

To increase the fat content, you can use more hemp seeds, add cashews, almonds, or vegan butter to the sauce.

If you lack dates or a blender, replace the dates with 2 teaspoons of maple syrup.

More Easy Vegan Condiments

If you loved this buffalo sauce, you’ll adore these other delightful vegan condiments:

  1. Sugar-Free Mango Chutney
  2. Simple Almond Ricotta
  3. Creamy Herbed Ranch Dip
  4. Creamy Green Goddess Hummus
  5. Cashew Sour Cream

Bon appétit and happy dipping!
